CIW inmates in Mandaluyong City get flu shots

A total of 690 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs), most of them seniors and others with comorbidities, at the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City has been vaccinated against flu.

The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) on Friday, Jan. 28, said the flu vaccinations were conducted last Dec. 29 and 30.

It said that last Jan. 4, “CIW personnel were also given vitamins, and flu vaccines to bolster their immune systems as part of the institution’s continuous combat against the life-threatening COVID-19 virus.”

“This institution not only places considerable emphasis on the well-being of those PDLs under its custody, but it also guarantees that the health of its workforce is catered as well,” it stressed.

It pointed out that corrections officers in its seven prison facilities nationwide are “regarded as the foundation of the prison system, and as such, their wellness must be given adequate advantage.”

The flu vaccination program at CIW was conducted through the assistance of the Mandaluyong City Health Office which also supplied the vaccines, it said.

A total of 3,297 out of 3,340 total inmate population at the CIW has been vaccinated against COVID-19 as of last Jan. 4, it added.
